Environmental Performance Index

In many occasions, your eyes start constructing your opinion before  your mind has started any type of reasoning.

This is certainly the case with this wonderful world map of the 2010 Environmental Performance Index (EPI). You can go to their site http://epi.yale.edu/ and look not only to the graphs but also to the charts!

These index ranks 163 countries on 25 performance indicators tracked across ten policy categories covering both environmental public health and ecosystem vitality.

These indicators provide a gauge at a national government scale of how close countries are to established environmental policy goals.

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is a method of quantifying and numerically benchmarking the environmental performance of a country's policies. This index was developed from the Pilot Environmental Performance Index, first published in 2002, and designed to supplement the environmental targets set forth in the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

The EPI was preceded by the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI), published between 1999 and 2005. Both indexes were developed by Yale University (Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy) and Columbia University (Center for International Earth Science Information Network) in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
